Thirteen Foods From the 2006 Texas State Fair

I know it's not time for The Fair again, but it's so pretty, I just thought about being outside, walking around. And where better to do that than at the Texas State Fair. Here are some of the food offerings that you missed out on from last year.

1. Deep Fried Cosmopolitan - A delicious fried pastry is filled with rich cheesecake and topped with a sweet & tangy cranberry glaze and a lime wedge. Served on a stick.

2. Fernie's Fried Choco-rito - A flour tortilla – stuffed with marshmallows, coconut, candy bar pieces, caramel morsels and cinnamon – is dipped in pancake batter and deep fried to a crispy, crunchy outside and sweet, gooey inside. Drizzled with honey and topped with whipped cream.

3. Fernie's Fried Mac 'n Cheese - Texas-sized bites of macaroni & cheese, covered with a layer of garlic & herb-flavored bread crumbs, are deep fried until crispy outside and hot & cheesy inside. Served on a stick with a side of dipping sauces. (Fried Mac 'n' Cheese ROCKS!!!)

4. Fried Coke - Smooth spheres of Coca-Cola-flavored batter are deep fried, drizzled with pure Coke fountain syrup, topped with whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and a cherry. Served in souvenir contoured glasses.

5. Fried Pancake Sundae – Tasty country sausage bites wrapped in a light pancake batter, deep fried to perfection , topped with whipped cream, lightly glazed with hot fudge sauce and finished with a cherry on top. Pineapple and strawberry glaze options available.

6. Fried Praline Perfection - Guaranteed to melt in your mouth. Plump coconut and pecan pralines, battered and fried to a rich golden crust. Served warm with powdered sugar.

7. Hast Texas BBQ Nachos – Fair-famous Hast Texas Nachos are topped with BBQ beef and covered with a special-recipe sauce

8. Melon Monroe – Honey dew melon sauce ladled over chocolate chip ice cream, topped with whipped cream then garnished with two fried-dough, shaped "legs" filled with a special caramel sauce. Served fresh out of the fryer. "Some like it hot !"

9. S'mores – A new twist on a campfire favorite. Two graham crackers are pressed together with a marshmallow crème filling, skewered on a stick and dipped in delicious chocolate.

10. Texas Cajun Steak On-a-Stick – Tender morsels of steak coated in a spicy Cajun batter, fried golden brown and served on a stick with red or white dipping sauce.

11. Beef & Beans Fire Bowl – A fired-up, one-dish meal made from ground beef, spicy beans, corn, crushed red peppers and Hotter N Hell seasoning covered with a baked-on jalapeno cornbread top. Not for the weak-hearted.

12. Cinnamon Praline Bananas Foster -- Caramelized banana rum sauce poured over Blue Bell Cinnamon ice cream, covered with whipped cream and topped off with a rich pecan praline sauce.

13. Donkey Tails - Large all-beef franks, slit on one side and generously stuffed with sharp cheddar cheese, are wrapped tightly in a large flour tortilla and fried until golden brown. Served with mustard, chili, or Ruth's salsa.

What's the strangest thing you've ever eaten?

I am so going to the Texas state fair this year! How long do you think it would take to drive there from Montana? :D

I started reading the list and told my husband what it was about. I then said that more than 1/2 had something in common, he answered correctly, "fried".
We don't have quite that many fried foods up here, so it is quite a list for me to read. The chocorito sounds intriguing. Have you had any of these?

My brother lives in Dallas and told me about the Fried Mac 'n Cheese. I'm gonna have to go this year! Happy TT!

Mmmm, you're making me hungry! What a yummy-sounding list.

Happy TT, and thanks for visiting my blog!

Okay, I am a sheltered woman. I've got to try these foods.

In the name of research, don'tcha know. I'm sure I have a character -- well, two immediately come to mind -- who love deep-fried food as much as I do.

I just wish cholesterol wasn't an issue. *sigh*

Happy TT!

My arteries are clogging just reading that! happy TT :)

what about funnel cakes? i thought they were a state fair standard? (and also fried)

I'm not sure if that list made me hungry or not.

TGI Fridays has fried mac n cheese now, it's pretty good, but the fried green beans are the bomb.

I gained 10 pounds just reading this!

I like funnel cakes at the fair, but I don't even like most of the regular stuff so I definitely avoid all "weird" foods. :-)
Happy TT!

That is the best food list I've ever read.

I think my arteries clogged as I read the list - yeowza! I think with some clever marketing we could pass off #8 as healthy. It has fruit and there have been some recent studies that say chocolate's good for you too ;)

Oh, my goodness! A fellow Texan, and you are within "spittin' distance!" Jennymcb told me I should rush right over. I haven't been to the fair in so long! This was a great list. But where are the corny dogs? You can't go to the fair without eating a corny dog! Strangest thing I've ever eaten? Tofu--it's not half bad fried in bacon grease.

I miss Texas!! I loved the Fair. My TT is up at http://freestuff4kids.net/ - 13 ways to dress up Rice Krispy Treats!
Enjoyed your list!

Oh, my -- you can almost get a sugar high just from reading that! My husband and sons were at some gathering a few months ago that has fried Oreos.

Robin said...

Wow, you Texans sure like your fried food! I've never had it, but I'm pretty sure I'd sell my soul for a taste of that fried cosmopolitan though.

Happy TT.

my stomach hurts just reading about all that fried food LOL! Strangest thing I've ever eaten would have to be chitlins...UGH!

Wow!! Some of the things listed...I haven't even heard of! The fairs in Tennessee have the regular corn on the cob, funnel cakes, cotton candy. The pancake sundae & fried mac-n-cheese sound quite interesting I must say!!!

you're making me hungry ... ugh ...

Interesting list. :-) I'm a picky eater so I'm not sure any of those are for me. I usually stick with the funnel cakes and the bloomin' onion type things. I may have to branch out and try one of these next time I am at a fair or carnival type thing.

Wow! Can't say I've heard of many of these. But I do like that most are F-R-I-E-D. Makes me want to take a road trip to Texas.

Is this a secret Texan project to use environmental exposure to breed a fat resistant human?

Fantastic TT list Vader's Mom!

Oh my, I could go for some Fried Coke, Texas Cajun Steak On-a-Stick and a Donkey Tail please...

Stacy at Exceedingly Mundane said...

OK, I can't say that I've heard of most of these either. I don't think they have them at our state fair, although we have our fair share of fried everything. You know what is bad, I think I've been to the TX state fair once (is it in mid-October, at the Cotton Bowl?) and I don't even remember seeing most of these kinds of food places! :)

Great T13!

I love this list. I read a story about the fried Coke in our local paper...and it was citing the fact that it was introduced at your fair. Too funny. I'd love to try the bananas foster thing...sounds YUMMY!!

Is it normal for me to have water coming to my mouth?? Usualy, when I go to a fait, I don't eat much stuff they have there, because I go to the ride, but I might chance my mind if I went to your fair!!!
Great TT!!

Oh. My. Gosh. My mouth is SERIOUSLY watering!! I shouldn't have read this right before dinner because now I'm FAMISHED!

Geez Stacy, how in the WORLD do you stay so skinny with all of that delicious fried stuff? I think to start off with, I'll take a #3 and 4, 7 and for dessert I'll take a #1 and 2 and to top off my day, I'll take a #8. (Must have my fruit, you see. *grin*)

Your fair puts ours to serious shame. :-)

YUM! Any time you get the words fried, dough, and chocolate together, it's a guaranteed party! I have not heard of most of these and it's a darn good thing too or I'd be 800000 lbs and they'd be lifting my butt out of the house on a crane!

Tell me you didn't eat them all (did you?? hehe)

Thanks for stopping by Snarkypants. Have a great weekend!

Oh, a lot of those sound delicious! :) My mom says that S'mores are the best - she used to be a Girl Guide and they would make those whenever they went camping.

I can see how someone could easily gain a few pounds at the State Fair!

Can ya fry anything else?! I'm coming to the state fair with you!!!
